27.805 & 27.856MHz USB...

There are two Japanese stations on both 27.805 & 27.856MHz USB audible here each day with what seems to be a station check in rota.  One base station very strong here calling in weaker stations (probably from a list).  The weaker station responds very briefly and then the base operator calls the next on the list and so on.  It goes on for around 10 to 20 mins, usually just past the hour.

27.805MHz is the most active with 27.856MHz USB to a lesser extent, same format used on both frequencies.

Maybe fishing trawlers? Anyone like to make a guess?

That would be my guess, that or freebanders doing a net (or perhaps a combination of both)

R4002, not a net as no conversations take place, base station calls from probably a list, station acknowledges, a couple of numbers are mentioned (san go, hachi ni etc) by the base station in Japanese, then next one and so on...

There was a lady running the base yesterday and she was 10dB over here, 0200-0220 then all finished.  Might ask a JA amateur who can help solve...

Tuned 27.805MHz USB yesterday at 0200z and heard the Base Station open up with an introduction and heard the English word "meteo" mentioned twice. 

This may suggest this station is issuing weather information?  After the intro the check in rota was performed as per usual.  May need to ask some JA radio friends as to what this is all about...

I concur on likely being marine traffic. Freebanding, check ins, and WX reports. Sounds like a small commercial operation or simolar. Much the same traffic in Spanish over here around the Gulf of Mexico, especially for smaller operations out of Mexico and countries further south.

A friend in Japan has informed me that these are recreational marine stations that provide weather information and most are volunteer stations, similar to the 27.880MHz AM mode recreational fishing and boating frequency in Australia, run by volunteers.

The Japanese stations are low powered simple stations, the stations checking in are acknowledging receipt of the information sent by the main base.  The Japanese coast is dotted with these stations.  He has referred me to the Japanese frequency allocation listings for this segment, plus others.
