Title: Chinese surveillance balloon
Post by: Yardley on February 04, 2023, 2113 UTC

It has to transmit and receive.

Has anyone been able to hear anything from this thing?

Remembering Sputnik, I'm very surprised the amateur radio/monitoring community hasn't been all over this.

Yes, but it is still possible someone was able to hear something, if it was indeed communicating.
Hope someone will "rise" to the occasion, and not be full of "hot air"!  ;)

Sputnik "beeped" in the MW band. It was the USSR's way of saying, "Up yours, America!" every time it went over.

Sputnik "beeped" on 20 & 40 MHz;
The only "beeping" on MW was as to why Ike was out playing golf while the Russians were preparing a satellite.

Ike was cool like that. He'd won the war in Europe, he wasn't sweating a metal cantaloupe with whiskers circling overhead.

Dunno if they still have the links up but the balloons were commercially available worldwide, however chicom mil modified theirs a bit, theirs had things they could deploy/eject, among other goodies. I presume the balloons used sats to communicate the imint/sigint harvest back to Peking.
