I wonder if there are any other SWLs that
routinely carry small portable receivers with them
when they are on hikes etc.  Doesn't seem
like many SWLs do.  Or is it that most SWLs don't
hike much.  I don't have a clue.

Today with the KA 1103 while out
in the Pike National Forest on a slow poke around
hike...I heard at 1900utc

S, OR, CO, Pike, BC, and
6626 diter (Rocky/Rainy) and the 6700 dasher.

I havent heard the 6700 dasher in quite a while
I dont even hear it at the home QTH or it seems like it has been a long time...
I was also able to compare the Ka 1102 against the KA 1103 ...the 1103 was more sensitive.

Any how maybe some guys that like to get out of doors
will respond...

You have been reading my mind!
(not to brag- a short trip  ;D)   ::)

Over in Florida we do have a number of remote areas and some have
a observation towers which may accommodate just what you were
addressing. With that in mind, and without spending a  lot, I've been
seriously thinking of a new portable, one with SSB/CW capability of course
for accompanying me on hikes. My wife and I do hike in the remote
areas quite often and I'm sure the noise level would be much reduced
as you have commented on several times.

How do you personally rate the KA1102- 1103 series? How do they
compare with the lower grade Sangean models?

Any help or opinions would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I take my E5 up the mountain, but I have been tied to work most of this year to go hiking.

Weaksigs - the KA1103, Sony 7600 and Eton E5 all rank high on the scale for affordability and performance in their category.

Best bet is to Google as many reputable reviews as you can, then check availability.

Peace!

The tuning steps of the KA 1102 are not
my favorite...I tested the two radios side by side
in the field the other  and the KA 1103 won out. I also like
the tuning on the KA 1103 better.  The KA 1103 is a bit larger
the little KA 1102 fits nicely in a fly fishing shirt pocket.

I can compare to other portables...but I bet your like the KA 1103.

I did QRP in the field  on CW in the 80s and a lot of it...
Oddly enough I enjoy the simplicity of carrying only a receiver
with me and listening around the ham bands both CW and SSB and
the thought of setting up a dipole or end fed wire does not turn
me on so much any more...but listening sure does.

Funny how a guys interest changes...

I never go anywhere without a SW rx. The camping gear includes a fannypack with a YB400 and accessories in it.  Antenna reel, headphones, spare batts. alligator clipleads, ground spikes, etc.
