He soon thought of using shortwave radio to broadcast Christian programming worldwide.<br /> <br /> In 1976, Hall, now a minister, educator, and missionary, formed the World Christian Broadcasting Corporation to help make his idea a reality. Unfortunately, the next year a founding director of WCBC, Lowell Perry, was killed in a plane crash while trying to find a transmitter site. In 1979, land was purchased in Alaska.<br /> <br /> KNLS started broadcasting in 1983 and originally aired 10 hours of Mandarin Chinese and Russian programming, although English programming was also added. In 1989, WCBC built a new programming center in Franklin, Tennessee, which included recording studios and offices for staff. In 2005, a second transmitter was installed in Alaska.<br /> <br /> In 2016, [[MWV]], a sister station to KNLS also owned by WCBC, started broadcasting, allowing WCBC to reach about 80% of the global population.<br /> <br /> ==KNLS today==<br /> Today, KNLS broadcasts for 10 hours a day on two transmitters across various frequencies in Mandarin Chinese, English, and Russian. It targets the Far East, northern China, and eastern Russia, along with the Pacific Rim.<br /> <br /> Unlike other radio stations, KNLS does not solicit donations.
