The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is the agency responsible for promulgating and enforcing regulations regarding many types of communications in the USA, including radio transmission and reception. In particular, it licenses and polices transmitting stations. As unlicensed broadcasters, Pirate Radio Stations are at particular risk of running afoul of FCC regulations, and may face penalties ranging from warnings, to fines, equipment confiscation, and even imprisonment. While FCC enforcement affecting pirates has of late concentrated on FM pirates, it has, in the past, punished shortwave pirates, and may (and probably will) do so in the future. One example is the Great Halloween Bust of 1998.

Other names for the FCC include the Flunked Clown College, the Friendly Candy Company and Fansome Communication Commandos. AMers (e.g. Timtron) refer to the FCC as the FeeCee.
The not-for-profit corporation devotes any funds in excess of its costs to promoting the amateur radio hobby to newcomers, especially young people. Because The Hosstraders insisted that every penny went to the hospitals, the Simadi club donated the money directly to the hospitals, bypassing the state lodge in Manchester.

Hosstraders was a radio "Tailgating Swapfest" conducted at various venues in the State of New HAMpshire from 1973 through October 2006. It was held at various venues starting in Seabrook NH, (1973-75) thence to Deerfield NH Fairgrounds (current home of NEAR-Fest) 1976-92 with a one-year side trip to Kingston (1986). In 1993 Hosstraders left Deerfield permanently relocating to the Rochester Fairgrounds (1993-2000) then finally moving to the NH State Fairgrounds at Hopkinton NH (2001-2007).

The Hosstraders were not a club or formal organization; they were three individuals: Bob Tiffany, W1GWU, Norm Blake, WA1IVB (now W1ITT) and Joe Demaso K1RQG. Their event was best described as a "benevolent dictatorship. Originally the Hosstraders was a one-day event, held on the second Saturday in May. In 1983 it was decided to hold the event twice annually and a few years later it became a two-day even. This was because people were arriving earlier and earlier and the Fair Association decided to charge the Hosstraders for two days.

The Hosstraders were non-profit. The money in excess of their pitiful expenses were donated to a very worthy cause. During their 34 year run The Hosstraders raised 1.3 million dollars for the Shriners Hospitals for crippled children in Montreal and Springfield MA as well as and the Burns Unit in Boston. The Simadi Shrine Club of Rochester NH helped The Hosstraders organize and run the event. Because The Hosstraders insisted that every penny went to the hospitals, the Simadi club donated the money directly to the hospitals, bypassing the state lodge in Manchester.
NEAR-Fest is NOT run by a club or any other such entity. The not-for-profit corporation devotes any funds in excess of its costs to promoting the amateur radio hobby to newcomers, especially young people. Tim purchased The Cadaverlac in 1993 in Throwupton (Upton) Kentucky while working there installing a shortwave transmitter at WJCR, a well-known Bible Beater station at the time.

The Yay-em station installed in the Cadaverlac consists of a home-brew transmitter with an 813 final amplifier modulated by a pair of 811s. The audio driver is a much modified DuKane PA amplifier with an outpoot of 8-10 Watts. RF exciter is a Gonset G77 and the receiver is a Gonset G66 both highly modified. All B+ voltages on board The Cadaverlac are derived from military surplus dynamotors.

Cadaverlac sightings have been reported at many hamfests in the Northeast in the 1990s and early 2000s. Unfortunately the salt on the roads in the Northeast have taken their toll and at the present time The Cadaverlac has several bodywork issues that require attention. These have not been completed and the vehicle is out of service for the time being. It is anticipated, however, that The Cadaverlac will be returned to service sometime, probably coinciding with a convening of The NEAR-Fest hamfester at Deerfield HN.
Radio Clandestine is profiled in jta's show "Talkin' 'bout Pirates" (c. 1985) and show excerpts were featured.
