Major World Air Route Area (MWARA) Frequencies

Vast areas of the world lack the necessary VHF airband communication systems needed to provide reliable radio coverage between aircrews and air traffic controllers. This lack of VHF coverage is generally due to their remote locations - for example much of the airspace over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. To compensate for this lack of VHF coverage a group of HF Frequencies has been allocated. Each set of frequencies are often referred to as 'families'. Aircraft flying over the major ocean routes often use a combination of HF SSB voice radio, SATVOICE, the ACARS datalink system to communicate with air traffic control and regular VHF aircraft radio to communicate with other aircraft flying at high altitudes. Over the Atlantic and Pacific, the most common frequency for air to air (or "interplane") communications is the so-called "fingers" frequency 123.45 MHz AM. 123.45MHz is designated Pacific Air-to-Air as well as Atlantic Air-to-Air.

Note: the search and rescue (SAR) emergency frequencies are used by and for other |services, including the HF maritime mobile service (2-30 MHz HF SSB marine radio). The VHF Guard frequency of 121.5 MHz and the UHF Guard frequency of 243.0 MHz both still apply, see also: VHF marine band frequencies. 123.45 MHz is also heavily used for air to air communications in some busy areas i.e. the North Atlantic Track system area with heavy traffic.

Radio communications range - planning range. Note that the 10 MHz and above frequencies are generally used during daytime only, and frequencies below 5 MHz are generally used during night time only. The 5-10 MHz region is used 24 hours a day. Frequency usage, noise levels, propagation conditions and interference may result in use of alternate frequencies.
