Emission Designators

For a more in depth discussion of transmission modes (emission types), analog and digital, please also see the signal identification page / what am I hearing on my SDR? What is this strange sound on HF radio strange signals shortwave radio?? page.

Often just the last 3 characters are used. For example, A3E or A3 to indicate AM voice or AM telephony / AM phone, F3E or F3 to indicate FM voice or FM telephony / FM phone, J3E is used to indicate single side band (SSB).

Other sources will omit characters. For example, 8K5F3E instead of 8K50F3E or 20KF3E or 12K F3E instead of 20K0F3E,12K0F3E etc. Some radio communications equipment manufacturers interchange designators for interoperable designators (for example, 16K0F3E and 20K0F3E). 16K0F3E and 16K0G3E are considered interchangeable, FCC licenses often list VHF marine radios as 16K0G3E voice emission mode.

For analog voice modes, such as AM, FM and SSB, bandwidths do not need to be identical. Sometimes regulations require use of narrowband emissions, including the Part 90 land mobile radio services on VHF and UHF bands above 150 MHz in the United States and the NTIA-regulated military/government land mobile radio bands 137-144 MHz, 148-150.8 MHz, 380-399.9 MHz and 406-420 MHz. There are some exceptions to this, including amateur radio (ham radio), VHF marine radio and a handful of other services (for example, the license-free MURS service permits use of 5 kHz deviation FM - or wideband FM on 2 of the 5 MURS frequencies but the other 3 MURS frequencies are restricted to the same 2.5 kHz deviation that regular land mobile services such as Business Radio and Public Safety users are required to use under FCC regulations.
